A beautiful and frightening shop awaited our group in the town of Avanos.
A chilly, labyrinthine cave had been stocked floor-to-ceiling with gorgeous hand-painted pottery. My fear, then, was of knocking over any of the precariously perched plates dangling gingerly from wall hooks.
Angie and I nearly succumbed to the Turkish carpet fever that swept over our fellow travelers. Tour member Judy, for instance, appeared elated at her stunning purchases, but only managed a nervous giggle when someone dared ask how much she had just spent. These are Turkey's most famous export for a reason: the carpets are mesmerizing and lovely.
In truth, we took home very few souvenirs: Christa's necklace, Diane & Steve's family neckies, Judy's Indian skirt, Gail's tea, an evil eye, a Silk Road CD, Angie's blue headscarf, a fairy chimney T-shirt.
