Astonishingly, we had the ancient site of Aphrodisias largely to ourselves for the afternoon.

Ducking low columns and dodging loose stones of the harabeler (ha-ra-bay-LEHR, ruins), I marveled at how well preserved the 30,000-seat stadium still seemed after 1,500 years or more.

Equally impressive was the accessibility of the ruins. We were free to carefully walk about on most of the structures; no ropes, no guards—except the heavily armed sentries at the park entrance.

I couldn't understand why these fascinating ruins were so unpopular with tourists—but I was grateful for the lack of crowds.

After my walk, I drank three Sprites.
