"Bodrum! You can see Greece from there!" Fahriye's mother bragged about her lifelong worldly travels, all the way from Cappadocia to Turkey's southwestern coast.
Fahriye was a hardworking villager who met with us and even cooked us lunch: couscous, beans, and tomato and cucumber salad. We playfully quizzed her on Turkish village life in her sitting room overlooking the mountains of Cappadocia.
Some of us tried to clear our own dishes at the end of the meal.
Even a language barrier didn't hinder our understanding when Fahriye and her mother brusquely waved us down and marched out the door with the plates.
