The minarets flanking many a local camii (ja-MEE, mosque) reminded me of the far-future Morlock mind control siren towers from H.G Wells' The Time Machine.
Not helping dispel this notion were the five daily calls to prayer, sung in booming tones from the towers.
We met up with our tour group, including guides Sidar and Taylan.
"The muezzin who sing the call to prayer, they used to be skinny guys, because they had to walk up and down the minaret steps five times a day," Sidar explained.
"But now, with electronic speakers, they're in a room somewhere below, so now they're usually... ah... heavier," he grinned.
